Polytechnics to start degree programme in technical education —NBTE

National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) is to introduce Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programme in polytechnics across the country.

This was announced by the NBTE Chairman, Dr Nuru Yakubu, at a five-day training workshop on revitalisation of technical education organised by UNESCO in Bauchi.
Yakubu said the board had designed a degree programme to be offered by polytechnics to enhance technical education.

The Chairman, who did not give details on the time for the take off of the programme, said interested candidates would be required to have a minimum of five credits at SSCE and lower credit in a relevant accredited diploma programme.

He added:``The programme shall be run by polytechnics with adequate resources and experience in running Higher National Diploma (HND).’’

The federal government, he said, had also approved the establishment of Vocational Enterprise Institutions (VEIs) and Innovation Enterprise institutions (IEIs).
``These institutions will accommodate the multitude of secondary school leavers and encourage private sector participation in skills acquisition training.
``The aim is to widen access to technical and vocational education and serve the needs of emerging industries and for self empowerment.'' He said.

He explained that the programme would be run by private institutions to enhance innovative and professional training aimed at meeting the demand for technical manpower in the country.
Yakubu said the federal government had granted licences to about 80 institutions for the successful take-off of the programme, while the board had developed 25 curricula and three course specifications for the institutions.

‘’The institutions will provide training in welding and fabrication, petroleum geo-sciences, software and hardware engineering technology, film and TV production, hospitality and tourism, fashion and design, music and para-legal studies,’’ he said.
The UNESCO-Nigeria programme was initiated in 2001 to revitalise technical and vocational education in the country.

More than 8,600 academic and non-academic staff of polytechnics have, so far, been trained under the project across the country
