Anti-corruption war will make Nigerians integrity-conscious —ICPC
Ongoing anti-corruption war will help Nigerians to imbibe the culture of integrity,
according to the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission
(ICPC), Justice Emmanuel Ayoola.
He made the assertion when the Managing Director of Nigeria Social Insurance
Trust Fund (NSITF), Dr Enukora Okoli, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
Ayoola said most Nigerians did not understand the work of the commission,
noting that
investigation and prosecution of cases of corruption were just a fraction
of what it stood
for.
He declared: ``We know that Nigerians want sensation and entertainment. Our
investigation
and prosecution activities provide such.
``If they do not get satisfaction in these, they probably believe that we
are not working.
``We do not see ourselves as an organisation set up purely to investigate
and prosecute
cases. We have other mandate as well.’’
He identified the Commission’s mandate to include, education, systems
review, public enlightenment and mobilisation, among others.
Ayoola said the commission had discovered that if it was to fight corruption
``we must fight
it through education, by examining and reviewing the system and procedures
of
government agencies''.
``Our destination is the transformation of the society. We do not want to
put our country in
a situation whereby unless people are monitored, they cannot have integrity,’’
he said.
Similarly, he said, ``Our destination is a society in which every Nigerian,
whether he is watched or not, will have integrity as a second nature. That
is the society we aspire for.’’
The chairman said that in order to ensure a corrupt-free society, the crusade
must
carried to the grass roots.
He said this could only be achieved with the collaboration of well meaning
Nigerians
and the Nigeria Social insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).
Earlier, Okoli said he was at the commission to intimate Ayoola of the activities
of NSITF
and solicit his collaboration.
He said NSITF was the sole agency of the Federal Government with the mandate
to
provide social security for all Nigerians.
``We are determined to work with ICPC to establish and entrench social security
in the country,’’ he said.
