NEMA blames Lagos govt for floods
Perennial floods being experienced in parts of Lagos as a result of the rains
have been blamed on the state government.
This was the deduction of the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA).
The Agency’s South-West Coordinator, Mr. Mike Adeyanju told journalists
in Lagos that the floods were being caused by ‘’blocked drains
and waterways.’’
He advised the atate government ‘’to clear the structures on the
canals and drains.’’
''Thirty minutes after any rainfall in Lagos, hundreds of residents are displaced
and
property worth millions are lost in the process.
'' To reduce the effect of flooding in the state, Lagos State Government should
sustain its on-going removal of structures blocking the drains,'' he said.
Adeyanju noted that Lagos as a coastal state was more prone to flooding and
advised the government to take necessary measures that would check the menace.
''NEMA is aware of the several efforts of the government in de-flooding the
state
but a lot still needs to be done to make it habitable and environment-friendly.
''We cannot continue to lose our dear ones and property to this preventable
environmental problems through our inaction,'' Adeyanju said.
He said the agency had alerted the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA)
on the need’’ to identify flood-prone areas with a view to sensitise
residents on the dangers of blocked drains.’’
