Hunter dies after receiving six strokes of horsewhip

From Olu Osikoya; Abeokuta

Tragedy struck at Mogborede village in Ogere in Remo North Local Government of Ogun State, when a hunter slumped after receiving six strokes of the cane.

He was immediately rushed to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, in neighbouring Sagamu township, where he died 15 days on admission.

The hunter, whose name was given as Mr. Tolani Ayanyemi, was being punished for non-registration with the Hunters Association in the area when fell down unconscious.
Homicide detectives from the State Police Command, Eleweran, in Abeokuta are trying to unravel the circumstances which eventually led to his death.

National Daily learnt that the late Ayanyemi, a resident of Mogborede village in Ogere, had been involed in a running battle with the Association, before the incident.
Dependable sources said the residents of the village took the issue of registration very seriously as a way of curbing the menace of armed robbers.

It was learnt that both Ayanyemi and his Landlord, Sunday Morakinyo were found guilty of practicing without registration and subsequently fined six strokes of horse whip.
Already, the leader of the Association in the area has made useful statements to the police over Ayanyemi’s death.

Doctors at the Teaching Hospital are to perform necessary autopsy on the body of the late hunter to ascertain possible cause of death.

Contacted, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Olusegun Solomon, confirmed the incident, saying ‘’ investigation on the matter is still in progress, while anybody found guilty will face the wrath of the law.’’
