A bill for legislation to protect the rights of people living with the much-dreaded
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), is soon to be tabled before the
Bayelsa state House of Assembly.
It is the brainchild of the State Action Committee on AIDS (SACA).
The proposed bill will help to curb discrimination against persons living
with HIV and AIDS, especially in the work place.
This was disclosed by Chief Don Evarada, SACA's Public Relations Officer,
in Yenagoa at SACA's public lecture on HIV and AIDS for officers and men of
the Police Command in
the state.
``We are planning to send a bill to the state House of Assembly to seek for
a legislation for the
protection of the rights of persons living with HIV and AIDS in the state.
``This is going to be SACA's contribution to the fight against stigmatisation
in our society,''
he said.
Evarada said society had not been fair to persons living with HIV and AIDS,
stressing that
discrimination had traumatised victims more than the virus itself.
In his address, Dr Temple Iluma, the SACA Chairman, said the programme was
organised
because of the committee's concern for the wellbeing of the officers and men
of our
security forces.
``In the task of crime fighting, our officers and men are often exposed to
unimaginable
socio-economic and health risks,'' he said.
Iluma, who was represented by the committee's Project Manager, Dr Awoli Anapurere,
expressed
regret that protection for security personnel and their families in sub-Saharan
Africa had not been
given the required attention.
The chairman said out-station duties performed by the security officers and
men often take them
away from their families and make them vulnerable to STDs.
Responding, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Julian Okpalake, thanked the committee
for its
contributions to the eradication of the pandemic.
He called on officers and men of the command to avail themselves of the free
testing and counselling opportunity provided by SACA.
