Fire guts Chinese company in Lagos

• Chinese –owned companies in trouble over standards

Fire has gutted a Chinese owned Crate and Carton Manufacturing factory, the second within two months, in Lagos.

The fire mishap, at the premises of NIPACO Nigeria Limited at Sapara Street, off Adeniyi Jones Avenue in Ikeja area of the metropolis, sent shivers around neighbouring companies while it lasted.
The inferno, which put alerted fire fighters to heavy task, has put to question the safety standards prevalent in most Chinese companies across the country.

An employee of the company who spoke under anonymity, said the fire was caused by sparks from a welding machine, at about 11a.m last Tuesday.

``As the machine was being used to weld the roof of the company, it spewed fire with some stored chemicals,'' he said.

He said the fire would have been curtailed if fire fighters had arrived on time, regretting that the entire company had been consumed by the inferno.

Spirited efforts by some neighbouring companies to assist in putting out the fire yielded no result.
Mr Taiwa Lakanu, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge
of Area F, Ikeja, said some 50 policemen had been drafted to the area to prevent hoodlums
from taking advantage of the situation to loot.

Mr Femi Osanyintolu, the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management
Agency (LASEMA), hinted that ‘’there were no casualties.’’
He said the Agency ‘’will investigate the incident to ascertain the possible cause.’’
National Daily investigations indicated that there were no fire extinguishers or even water with the gutted premises at the time of the mishap

Meanwhile , further investigations into the fire disaster are still in progress.
