Baryte importation is killing local market— Miners

Miners Association of Nigeria have decried the continuous importation of baryte and other minerals into the country.

This is because baryte can be found in Cross River, Benue, Nassarawa,Plateau and Taraba states.
The National President, of the Association, Mr Sunday Ekozin, told journalists in Abuja that the importation was impacting negatively on the patronage of the mineral obtained locally.

Ekozin, who refuted claims by the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, that Nigeria's baryte needed mixture of other types to be production- ready, said the nation was blessed with one of the best qualities of the mineral.

He said the importation had caused low patronage by oil companies who relied mainly on the imported brand.

``It is contradictory to be promoting baryte as one of the seven strategic minerals, and at the same timeencouraging importation of the mineral. This, no doubt,will destroy the local market.
``We do not have any business with importation because the nation has a massive deposit of baryte,'' Ekozin said.

The federal government had in 2003 placeda ban on the importation of the mineral.
But the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Chief Isola Sarafa, at a recent media forum, said ‘’the ban was ineffective following the low quality of the barite sourced locally.’’
