AFRICA'S 100 metres record holder, Olusoji Fasuba, remains Nigeria's biggest
medal hope at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the setbacks recorded on
the track in recent times notwithstanding.
That was the submission of former Olympian Gloria Obajimi while reacting to
skepticisms that Fasuba may not live up to his hype in Beijing following his
defeat by compatriots Adetuyi Durotoye and Obinna Metu at the Athletics Grand
Prix and the All Nigeria Championships respectively.
"Fasuba should be able to give world class performances at the Olympics,"
said Obajimi."And when they all line up for the final of the 100m he
should be there."
She continued:"He's supposed to be there because of the kind of performances
he has recorded this year, not to think about the fact that Metu and Durotuyi
beat him, it's not the same thing.
"Psychologically he may be down when those two upsets came up in Abuja
but, I think when it comes to giving world class performances Fasuba is good
and up there above the other two."
She said the sports authorities should be able to provide all the basic things
needed by athletes for them to fully concentrate on the assignment at hand.
