71 suspects arrested for illegal bunkering

No fewer than 71 suspects have been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Ogun State .

The suspects, whose offences ranged from pipeline vandalization and destruction of public utilities to breakdown of law and order, were caught at various locations within the past 12 months.

National Daily gathered that 33 of the suspects, who were involved in illegal bunkering, comprised 27 civilian and six others armed with sophisticated weapons in police uniform.

The 33 of them were apprehended in a major operation at Atijere, a border town between Ondo and Ogun state.
Authoritative sources revealed that 31 tankers loaded with siphoned petroleum products and a sum of N6.725million were recovered from the 33 suspects.

Dependable sources said that another set of 13 suspects who were said to have siphoned petroleum products were apprehended with four tankers loaded with petroleum products, 12 handsets and some other items, were arrested at Ibiade in the Ogun Waterside Local Government area of the state.

It was also learnt that the vandalization of PHCN transmission line at Onijangan-Jangan village in Obada-Oko in the Ewekoro Local Government area of Ogun State, led to the arrest of some other suspects.
Meanwhile, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have launched a 24-hour surveillance on the area to prevent further vandalisation.

Contacted, the state Commandant of the Corps, Mr. Popoola Waheed Bamidele, said ‘’those involved in the vandalization, and siphoning of petroleum products have been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for necessary prosecution.
