Nigerian Breweries vows to uphold unionism

…sets up golden pen award for journalists

IN apparent move to payback to the society, the Nigerian Breweries last week instituted its maiden yearly NB Golden Pen Award for Print Journalists across the country.

Just as it vowed to uphold unionism to protect the rights of the workers; ensure favourable working conditions and terms of service for their members; to shield workers from industrial capitalism; to the nagging conscience of the employer; to partner with the employer in harmonising the goals of the employer and the employee to achieve the common objective of enhanced productivity.

According to the company, the above listed conditions and others are the essence of unionism in any establishment and also “we want to make world class journalists out of Nigerian journalists in other subsequent edition of the award.”

Speaking at the maiden edition press briefing, the Corporate Affairs Adviser of NB, Ageni Yusuf, who with his maturity and patience answered all the harsh questions from the journalists, explained that the overall winner of the maiden NB golden pen award tagged “Golden Pen Reporter of the Year 2008” would go home with N500, 000; a laptop with coloured printer, and a plaque, while the second winner would go home with N250, 000; a laptop with a printer, and plaque, the third would go with N150,000 and there are five consolation prizes of digital cameras to be won.

In another development the branch Chairman of Food, Beverage, Tobacco (FOBTOB) Nigerian Breweries chapter, Esosa Aluyi, commended the management for allowing unionism to nurture and grow to the present stage.
Prior to my assumption in 2006, Aluyi explained, the company was going through transitional period. Though there was uncertainty among workers that made them to be apprehensive then, but today, the union has reached cost saving schemes.

Venting his anger at stereotype unionism that is always at loggerheads with the employers, Aluyi noted that forward thinking employers know that unionism is integral part of any successful business because any establishment which forbids its workers from having a voice to speak of their grievances would always encounter problems and lack of cooperation with the management. Fortunately, said Aluyi, NB is a forwarding thinking company and the management has always worked with the union.

Similarly most of the workers of the company commended the NB management for its sustenance of the in-house award for members of staff that have been an avenue to distinguish and reward hard work, which the management explained was to motivate workers to embark on research on how best to move the company forward.
