NUGA chief cautions private varsities on foreign tourneys

PRIVATE universities in Nigeria can organise sports competitions among themselves but cannot represent the country without the approval of the Nigeria University Games Association, NUGA Secretary Bola Orodele has said. He affirmed that the World Universities Games (FISU) recognises NUGA as the only body in Nigeria to present the country's university athletes at its competition.

"No matter how good you are as an athlete, if the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) does not forward your name, you cannot represent Nigeria at the Olympic Games. "So it is with NUGA's relationship with FISU," he said.
He said private universities, state-government universities and their federal counterparts were free to organise their own competitions but would still need NUGA as the umbrella body. "We will encourage them because such competitions are smaller and involves less logistics.

"The only thing is that NUGA should be aware of such bodies for effective monitoring and co-ordination,"Orodele said.

He revealed that some private universities had applied for affiliation with NUGA, adding that their applications would be considered during NUGA's Council meeting next week at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
