MTV Base/Shell supports African video directors

A new programme aimed at challenging and empowering young video directors on the African continent in coming up with quality video productions has been initiated.

Tagged; “MTV Making the Video Challenge with Shell, the programme is a brainchild of foremost cable outfit, MTV Base Networks Africa in collaboration with Shell Petroleum.

It has been billed to hold in four countries in four regions of Africa; Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Kenya between the months of August and September 2008.

MTV Making the Video Challenge with Shell features high profile contemporary African musicians, boost to puts African film makers and music video directors in direct contact with their peers from the international directing scene, allowing them to gain new skills and share insights while engaged in the creation of a state-of-the-art music video and also afford them direct experience of collaborating with a well known artist on the creation of a music video.

In Nigeria, MTV Making the Video Challenge with Shell will partner US director Jessy Terrero with Olu Maintain and Ghanaian star Okyeame Quame to create a music video for Maintain's 'Yahoozee - The Remix'.

The initiative, which kicked off in South Africa in August 2008, has also partnered Little X, the Toronto-born music video director behind cutting edge music videos with Sean Paul, Jay-Z and Rihanna, with South African video directors, kwaito artist Bleksem and Mozambique's Dama do Bling on their exciting single collaboration, 'Wena Uthini'. In Kenya, the initiative embraced teams of Kenyan directors, mentored by US director Melina (director of videos by Ashanti, Jennifer Lopez,

MTV Making the Video Challenge with Shell set up a competition between four teams of directors in each region. The four teams compete against each other to come up with the most creative, original conceptual video for a given song or track, and the team with the strongest idea is given the chance to create the video for their region. While each team has complete autonomy to realise their own vision, they will be mentored during the contest by an international director who will put their skills and experience at the disposal of the team.
