…goes tough on child drivers
IRKED by increasing rate of road accidents despite its efforts, the Federal
Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has urged parents to checkmate their children
and wards to forestall illegal driving of vehicles.
Just as it stipulated that there is no more automatic driver's licence to
conductor converted into drivers, saying before issuance of new driver's licence,
beneficiary must undergo thorough test drive.
Every driver's licence would be issued out to well tested individuals and
that act of changing into commercial driving conductorship would not be allowed.
Any would be driver would undergo test before the new driver's licence would
be released'”
The FRSC Corp Marshal, Osita Chidoka, who gave the warning at the flagging
off of the FRSC and Nigerian Breweries' Don't Drink and Drive (DDD) campaign
at the Ojota Garage last week, stated that the campaign became imperative
because most people needs to be educated and sensitise on road discipline.
Chidoka commended the Nigerian Breweries its social responsibility role to
reduce numbers of road casualties especially in the ember months and urged
other corporate entities to cooperate with the commission to educate more
drivers on safety.
Earlier, before the convoy left the Nigerian Breweries Iganmu complex for
Ojota, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the beverage office,
Michiel Herkemij stated that as part of the company's corporate social responsibility
initiatives, the company in conjunction with FRSC came up with the DDD as
a way of improving safety on Nigerian highways.
Herkemij noted that alcohol impairs clarity and concentration of any individual
and urged alcohol hungry individuals to avoid the temptation to take alcohol
before driving because of its ability to affect individual's judgement while
on wheel.
“In DDD, our company has a shared vision with the nation's FRSC, whose
corporate objectives espouses 'to encourage good driving habits and help reduce
and limit the impact of road traffic accidents. It was only natural therefore,
that our partnership with FRSC was not only imminent but desirable. This DDD
campaign is imperative.
However the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade
Rafiu Olohunwa praised the DDD campaign jointly organised by Nigerian Breweries
and FRSC, saying it was long overdue because of the efforts he and his colleagues
have been making to caution drivers against indiscipline on roads.
The Lagos State chairman of NURTW, Olohunwa urged members of the union to
desist from drinking and smoking before driving, saying “if you must
drink you must drink before bed at home and not drink and mess yourself up
or endanger the lives of others.”
In a telephone interview with National Daily, Olohunwa said that the union
was set to deal with defaulting members of the union that might still indulge
in drink before or while on steering wheel.
According to him, the union would no longer tolerate indiscipline among the
union membership, saying that the union was ready to ensure safety on roads
for members and also for travellers.
