Oliseh tasks Amodu on Olympic Eagles

Oliseh tasks Amodu on Olympic Eagles

By DIPO OKUBANJO

THE future of Nigeria's national soccer team as an all-conquering side would be guaranteed if the present Super Eagles handlers can allow bulk of the team that represented the country at the 2008 Olympic Games to graduate to the senior squad, former Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has said.

Indeed not a few have made similar suggestion since last August when the Under-23 team tagged 'Dream Team IV' narrowly lost the prestigious Olympic football gold to Argentina in Beijing. “The team fell to Argentina because they lacked the experience to conquer the Argentine team but the performance put up by the team was world class. “You don’t have to win gold to move forward and it has shown that we still have quality players in Nigeria,” said Oliseh.

He continued:“I say seventy percent of them should be moved to the Super Eagles because, since 1996, the Olympics has become the second World Cup.

“For the team to have performed so well at the Beijing Games, it shows they have what it takes to play at the big stage.”

However, the Eagles Head Coach, Amodu Shuaibu, has not made any pretension of his unwillingness to integrate many of the Olympic team players into the senior side.

Only recently, Amodu emphasised this by calling up most of the established players for next weekend's 2010 World and Nations Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone despite the fact that Nigeria had already made it through to the next phase of the competition.
