NERC sets up customer complaints forum

•FG to subsidize tariff with N179b

THE Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has set up a customer handling complaints forum to resolve major disputes outside the court system between electricity consumers and distribution companies.
Inaugurating the forum, Minister of State for Energy (Power), Hajiya Fatima Ibrahim, said electricity consumers in the country do not always receive satisfactory service due to the problem of bills, quality of supply and safety of life of equipments. Represented by Engr. Ngada Hyelempa, the minister said the forum for each distributing company area is made up of five members representing industrial customers, commercial customers and residential customers nominated by professionals and non-governmental organisations.

She said, "Consumers and distribution companies alike will now have an arbitration process that would ensure disputes are heard and competently addressed in line with our laws and the Electric Power Sector Reform Act, 2005"

Meanwhile, at the same event, the Federal Government gave its full backing to the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) introduced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), with a promise to subsidise electricity tariff for the next three years.

It has therefore set aside N178.98 billion to subsidise all electricity consumers for the three-year grace to manage the rate shock and improve power supply in the country.
The Minister believed that the new electricity rates will attract investors and ensure availability of power to consumers.

She said electricity is a very important pillar in Mr. President's seven point agenda, adding that government is committed to ensuring that the power sector takes its pride of place as the engine of development in the country. In his remarks, Chairman/CEO, NERC, Dr. Ransom Owan, said the event is a major milestone which is a fruit of the reforms in the power sector that makes consumer protection imperative. He said the NERC is well placed to ensure that distribution companies' performance in the area of overbilling, quality of service, safe operations and reliable supply become the norm in the industry.
