Lagos govt pledges support for Nollywood
EFFORTS by stakeholders of the Nigerian movie industry; Nollywood, to upgrade
standards and move the industry forward received a big boost at the weekend,
as the Lagos State government successfully signed a MOU with the National
Film & Video Censors Board that will enable it play a major role at restructuring
the industry.
The ceremony which held at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja had in attendance
stakeholders from all the guilds in Nollywood.
With the signing of this agreement, the Lagos State government now has a platform
to fulfill the election campaign promises made by Governor Raji Fashola to
give adequate support to the Nigerian entertainment industry if elected into
office.
Senator Tokunbo Aifikuyomi, Commissioner of Tourism & Inter-governmental
duties in Lagos State, who stood in for the state, noted that the present
understanding will not only see the state supporting Nollywood, but will also
provide Lagos the opportunity to help drive the industry.
He regretted that because of the way things are presently, the significant
wealth generated my the industry is not impacting on the welfare of practitioners.
“Governments are not helping the industry as it ought to. Because of
our lack of support to help raise standards the Chinese have stopped selling
their own films, they are now making millions from pirating and selling Nigerian
films”, he concluded.
In his own statement, Managing Director of NFVCB, Mr. Emeka Mba said he is
happy the partnership arrangement is taken off from Lagos state, adding: “Lagos
is unmistakably the heart of the movie industry.
He called on all other states in Nigeria to emulate the move by Lagos to support
the industry.
