Lip service, bane of our agriculture —Ugwu

From STEVE UZOECHI, Owerri

THE national president of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) Alumni Association, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwu has lamented the steady decline of agricultural development in Nigeria .

Ugwu who voiced his opinion to National Daily immediately after emerging the first National President of the Alumni Association, blamed the decay in the agricultural sector on government's lip service to many issues of urgent importance, militating against the development of the agricultural sector in Nigeria.

Ugwu maintained that policy formulation and implementation in agriculture should be left to the professionals , much the same way issues of law are left for the lawyers.

He however regretted that successive governments have favoured the use of politicians to man the Agriculture ministries at both the national and state levels, instead of agro-professionals.

While expressing disappointment that the Nigerian Government has largely ignored the potentials of the individuals trained in the special Universities of Agriculture in Nigeria, Ifeanyi Ugwu stressed that what Nigeria really needs is expert intervention and not merely political intervention in the handling of the current food crisis .
