NEW African queen of the track, Blessing Okagbare, says she is certain of making the cut in the Nigerian track and field team to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, even though the games are two years away.
Okagbare, who only last month dethroned compatriot Damola Osayomi as Africa's fastest woman in the 100m event of the continental athletics championships in Nairobi, Kenya, had in recent months taken the track world by storm, by winning the United States national championships in women's 100m and women’s long jump at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Eugene, Oregon. Okagbare, who has completed her first degree programme at the University of Texas El Paso, has opted to continue her education at the school and she is preparing herself for her next journey in track and field, hopefully to be at the 2012 Olympics.

'Bolt's "Unbeatable" Record Will Tumble'
ACCORDING to a leading physiology expert, if Usain Bolt were to compete against ‘tomorrow’s’ athletes he would almost certainly be an also-ran. Dr Edward Coyle, one of the lead speakers at UKsem 2010 a world-first conference on sport and exercise medicine, believes there is no roof to the speed capacity of humans in the future, and although Bolt’s time at the Beijing 2008 Olympics (clocked at a staggering 9.58 seconds), was deemed “unbeatable” by four-time Gold medalist Michael Johnson, athletes of the not-too-distant future are likely to leave the lightning Bolt trailing.
“I expect world records in athletics will continue to be broken for decades and centuries to come and that we, at this time, might have a hard time imagining the performances that people will one day achieve,” says Coyle, director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Texas.
Toblow Laments Late Camping For New Delhi
BARELY 41 days to the commencement of this year's Commonwealth Games holding in New Delhi, a national athletics coach, Tobias Igwe (aka Toblow), has expressed his unhappiness that Nigeria's athletics camp has not been opened for preparations ahead of the championships.
As the Athletics Federation of Nigeria is yet to open camp for the 31 athletes it recently penciled down for camping towards the Games, Toblow warned that late preparations would diminish the nation's medal chances in the track and field events of the quadrennial Games.
Toblow, who was part of the coaching crew that led Team Nigeria to Nairobi 2010 Athletics Championships where the country finished second behind hosts Kenya, also raised the alarm that most of the 31 athletes were not in good shape for the multi-sports event.
