BY NWADIKE UGOCHUKWU

FOUR commercial motor cycle operators in Port Harcourt, who played major role in foiling a kidnap attempt in Port Harcourt penultimate Thursday have been handsomely rewarded by the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

Announcing the reward which amounted to N7.5 million cash and a Toyota Hiace Bus for the motorcyclists for their bravery, Governor Amaechi said the Rivers State Government would continue to show appreciation to all those who assist government in restoring peace to the state.

He announced a gift of a brand new Toyota Hiace bus and five hundred thousand Naira to Mr. Osaki Harry, the motorcyclist, who raised alarm and trailed the kidnappers after the kids were abducted from their mother in the GRA area of Port Harcourt.

Nassarawa born motorcyclist, Mr. Joshua Sani who was shot at by the fleeing kidnappers, when he used his motorcycle to block their way and later grabbed the kidnapper, got N3 million for his bravery.
Peter Joshua and Meedoo Adoo, were rewarded with N2 million each for their role in arresting the kidnappers, while the State Government would pick up the entire cost of the medical bills of those ones injured during the incident.

Governor Amaechi encouraged the residents of the state to support government effort in fighting criminality and thanked the four young men for their action which led to the foiling of the kidnap attempt on two young school children Theophilous Wellington and Belema Wellington aged eight and six years respectively.
He explained that God used the motorcyclists to expose the evil men behind the criminal acts, and appealed to the residents of Port Harcourt, irrespective of where they came from, to assist in the fight against criminal activities in the state.

Presenting the gallant Okada riders to the State Governor, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bala Hassan explained that on July 17, 2008 , the Okada riders risked their lives and blocked the road which made it impossible for the kidnappers to escape after abducting two children from a private school at the GRA area of Port Harcourt .

Mr. Hassan said the gallantry of the young men helped the Police to apprehend two members of the gang, and commended them for their action.

He used the opportunity to call on the members of the public to always give useful information to the Police to enable them protect lives and property in the state.

In an interview with newsmen, one of the Okada riders Mr. Osaki Harry thanked Governor Chibuike Amaechi for rewarding them and called on other residents of the state to join the fight against kidnapping in the state.
