Cult suspects settle out of court
From SADIQ ABUBAKAR
THE seven students of the University of Maiduguri reportedly accused of threatening
the life of their room mate and suspected to be involved in cultist activities
at the university campus have agreed to settle their dispute with their room
mate out of court after they were charged to court for allegedly engaging
cult activities and assaulting their room mate. Chief Magistrate Court 5 which
was handling the case last week granted the demand of the complainant (names
withheld) to settle out of court as it was on his behalf that police earlier
charged the seven students [his room mates]to court for engaging in cultism
and allegedly pouring some substance suspected to be pepper into his eyes,
along Mairi Village of Maiduguri Metropolis near the University Campus.
The suspected cultists were also accused of threatening to kill their assaulted
room mate should he reveal that he was bathed with the suspected substance
by his room mates after the incident before he ran to the police for safety
and reported the matter.
However, the Prosecuting Police officer has earlier charged the seven students:
Yusuf Ahmed, 22; Fabian N. Fabian, 23; Peter Alhaji Jibrin, 26; Elvis Kelega,
19; Yunusa Mohamme, 23; Aye Danjuma, 21 and Mohammed Abdul, 26 years old,
whose Faculties and Programmes were not clearly stated as at the filing this
report. They were charged with a four-count of 'unlawful society, criminal
intimidation, causing hurt and joint act, punishable under sections 97b, 397,246
and 79 of the Penal Code Law.
The suspects denied all the charges against them before the subsequent withdrawal
of the case by the plaintiff for settlement outside the court room, surprisingly
to the chagrins of people in the court room.
