Non- indigenes enjoined to vote in Lagos Sat polls
By FIDELIS UGBOMEH
ELIGIBLE non-indigenes resident in Lagos state have been told to ''go out
and vote'' during Saturday's local government polls.
They were also advised to vote for the candidates of their choice during the
exercise.
The appeal was made by the Mayor of Non- indigenes , Eze [Dr.] Ngozi Ibekwe,
during a chat with National Daily in Lagos.
Eze's plea came as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), after months of uncertainties,
declared its interest to participate in the election.
The party had earlier instituted a civil action the ruling Action Congress
(AC) in the state, challenging its decision to conduct election into 57 local
government councils in the state.
A Lagos High Court threw the suit away, last Thursday, because ''it lacks
jurisdiction to entertain it.''
As if anticipating such a posture from the court, the PDP National Vice-Chairman
(South West), Alhaji Tajudeen Ladipo, announced, last Monday in Ibadan that
the party ''has decided to participated in the election.''
The PDP chieftain advised leaders of the party in Lagos ''to close ranks and
work for the party's victory at the local government polls.''
Commenting on Saturday's election during an emergency meeting, Ibekwe disclosed
that some non-indigenes would be contesting at the polls.
He identified the affected local governments as Ojokoro and Ojo.
In describing such a development as a magnanimity of the state government,
Ibekwe commended the opportunity offered a non-indigene to be serving as Commissioner
for Budget and Planning in the state.
Meanwhile, the Mayor has also enjoined non-indigenes in the sate to be alive
to their civic responsibilities.
Members of the Association are drawn from the South-East, South-South and
the North.
