NUC sets new agenda for 93 universities

From ODIMMEGWA JOHNPETER; Abuja

A NEW agenda, aimed at sanitizing University education in the country, has been put into motion by the National University Commission (NUC).

Under the programme, the 93 approved universities are to be serviced with Data Base projects..
Tagged: ''National Universities Commission Data Base,'' the centralized system is expected to provide a repository of information that gives accurate statistics of students, academic and non academic staff, research staff and facilities in each University in the country.

The importance of the project is coming from the back drop of unavailability of relevant data on the Universities, a requirement necessary for any educational system that is ready to embrace the opportunities offered by technological advancement and enable it compete favourably with other Institutions of learning across the globe.
Professor Julius A. Okojie, Executive Secretary of the commission said “the NUCDB project will amongst other things deliver complete academic records for Nigerian University graduates-past and present, automation of result gathering for present and future undergraduates, a standard information storage structure for all Universities, which will include results, staff information, student information, facilities information and lecture information.”
This apart, he said, ''the NUCDB project may well be the way out for Nigerian Universities to finally regain their positions as highly revered citadels of learning in comity of nations.''

Dr. Olumide Owolabi, project consultant, GUCCI CHIS Limited, said unavailability of a centralized data system had become one of the major reasons for the high turn out of unqualified graduates in Nigerian Universities.
''When there is no record, then unaccredited universities will spring up, unqualified lecturers will be hired, learning facilities will not match the teeming student populace, cultism will be rampant, regulation will be non existent and every thing that should work will not just be available,'' he said.

The NUCDB project is designed to capture and process information on all Nigerian students (past and present) in a format that will contain all students personal information such as names, gender, photograph, date of birth, next of kin, parental/guardian information amongst other. This format will also contain previous and present academic records, to allow for retrieval of academic history for future use by the students or interested bodies.
The project will also assist in government planning, especially in the distribution of research aids and allocation of resources to each University, as well as enable NUC to enforce and check some of its educational policies like the “Students to Lecturer Ratio” standard.

With the information, NUC can give accurate analysis of comparative performance of students in all higher institutions of learning, among other things.
