Group commends Lady Uduaghan's free maternal health-care programme

DELTA STATE First Lady, Mrs. Roli Sheila Uduaghan, has been commended for introducing free Maternal Health-Care Programme for the citizenry.

The commendation was contained in a statement issued by the Delta Patriotic Front (DPF) and signed by its chairperson, Mrs. Phillipa Atagana-Longe and Mr. Maxwell Okirikpo, Secretary.
The group said the programme was ''a laudable initiative, deserving of commendation, irrespective of peoples political or partisan persuasion.''

It noted that one aspect of the health system that had been of serious concern to the people ''is the prevailing resort of the rural women as well as the urban poor to sub-standard and hazardous maternal care practices, in spite of the successful introduction of modern maternal care systems at all level of the society over the years.''

It added: ''Such an unfortunate situation is due to inability to meet the minimal costs involved and lacking of awareness of existing opportunities as well as ignorance on the hazards involved in such unhealthy practices.''
It noted that the good gesture of the governor's wife, ''has the capacity of imparting on almost every family in the state and adding value to the lives of the people.''

It advised all Deltans ''to support and encourage the progressive policies and programmes of the state government for the betterment of all.''
