Iwu advocates electronic voting system for Nigeria, again

After it was roundly rejected by the National Assembly in 2006, the Electronic voting system may find its way back to the nation's electoral system, if the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Maurice Iwu, is allowed to have his way.

Speaking at a National Workshop on Balloting Method for future Elections organized by INEC at its Electoral Institute, in Abuja, Iwu eulogized the electronic voting system as being the panacea for Nigeria's electoral woes.
Iwu was of the view that the electronic voting system could substantially reduce or even totally eliminate the human influence in the balloting process.

“The use of electronic voting machine is there fore one method in balloting that needs serious consideration in the Nigerian electoral process. It holds out tremendous prospects, one of which is the capacity to minimize human influence and therefore enhance confidence in polls,” Iwu argued.

This apart, he said, “With the existence and application of the electronic voters register as well as the capacity for electronic transfer of data and results, the adoption of electronic voting machine will usher in a full use of the electronic voting system.”
